Why is Long-Word Decoding Important?

Reading long words is one of the biggest challenges for third graders.  Children who can easily read shorter words often have trouble with words of three or more syllables. Instruction in long-word decoding teaches children to read these words with greater confidence and ease  by breaking them into smaller word parts.

How Does this Program Teach Long-Word Decoding?

Each class includes formal skills instruction and games that are fun and productive. Using a self-paced workbook, your son or daughter will learn how to recognize prefixes, suffixes, and syllables in long words and use these word parts to decode words. Students also learn and practice a four-step strategy for reading long words.

As a result, your child will enter third grade able to read difficult words with greater ease and confidence. The self-paced workbooks will continue to support your son or daughter's skill development throughout the school year.
